I had the opportunity to see Lee Jenkins speak at a district institute day several months ago.  I felt empowered by his approach to informal assessments. When students are involved in tracking their progress toward a goal, they gain a sense of purpose and see their successes as smaller, more manageable goals.  Lee Jenkins' All-Time Best Board recognizes individual improvement in student achievement and the Class Run Charts track a group effort toward a goal.  Interestingly, I've discovered that some kids will work harder for the group than for a personal goal!
